Netflix opens Watch Now for Mac

Netflix has officially announced “Watch it Now” for the Mac is here! Thanks to the MS Silverlight-based streaming movie player for Apple, you can now stream movies on your Mac from any internet connection.

So far eight movies from Netflix’s “top 100,” and a lot of old stuff is available. Netflix cautions that “not all movies are available to watch with Silverlight” and that “you may notice errors or lower than normal quality when watching certain titles.

If your looking to hook your computer to your TV keep in mind that fullscreen mode doesn’t work on a second display, and silverlight only works with Intel Macs. The video quality can range from decent to poor. Its surly not as good as the PC version yet.

I canceled my Netflix in the summer when there seemed to be nothing I was interested in on DVD. I have recently signed up again to give the streaming a try. My opinion is that its great when you just want to watch a movie on your computer and don’t expect an amazing picture. If your looking for On-Demand quality, this setup is not for you, and needs improvement. Its a great start and worth $9 a month if you use it.

iTiVo convert to iTunes

Got a TiVo and a Mac? Well you can pull those shows you recorded straight to your Mac, convert them and even pull out the commercials with just a couple clicks. A google code project called iTiVo has had an update that turns this interesting app into a must have utility.

Imagine my amazement after installing this app and it finds my TiVo for me. Input my TiVo access key and select a couple shows to download. Click the options to cut out commercials during conversion and put the shows in my iTunes for me and leave it to its business. Come back a few hours later (depends on transfer rates and processor speeds) and you have your shows ready for your iPod. Finally something so technologically advanced, its easy.

Oh yeah, its free too. And works better than the TiVo Transfer I’ve been using From Roxio’s Toast app.

Check out iTivo at its google code page.

iTunes stopped podcast

I love having podcasts on my iPhone. And some of my favorites are from G4TV and Attack of the Show. I definitely don’t catch every episode, but when I’m in the mood to be entertained I want it to be there. The other day I opened up my podcast section on my iPhone and noticed that non of them where up to date. “I just synced my phone the other day” I thought. When I got back to my computer I noticed that iTunes had stopped updating my podcasts because I wasn’t watching them. But I was watching them on my iPhone. Who gives iTunes the right to stop updating? My TiVo doesn’t stop recording shows just because Im not watching. On top of that, there is no setting in iTunes to turn this feature off.

Well, once I noticed that Apple is being unresponsive to the publics numerous Apple Forum postings on this subject, I began a quest to fix it myself. er, well, find someone who fixed it that is, and solve my problem. Read the rest of this entry »

Netflix on your Mac

Update: It appears most sites have been premature to post this news as NetFlix has in fact not opened this to everyone yet. It is fact that it will be open to Mac users by the end of the year. If you really want it I suggest calling NetFlix and asking for the service early, as some users have been given early access.

Its been years,  Apple users want DRM streaming services like Netflix “watch it now”, on their Macs without running Windows or any Virtual Machines.Well good news because Netflix is now streaming to Intel Based Macs with the Silverlight 2.0 Safari and Firefox plugin from Microsoft.

With this move forward I would hope to see Netflix adding more content and HD options. In my opinion Netflix “watch it now” is a nice addition to receiving movies in the mail, but its no competition on its own, to Amazons online rentals and Unbox for TiVo. However with Netflix making the effort to expand to other platforms besides the PC market, I would expect to see them expand the service in the future.

Find large files fast

My 80Gig MacBook hard drive fills up fast. A lot faster than I realize at times. Being the type that likes new music, tv shows, and movies on my devices. Throw in a movie and sound editing project or two and space is gone in a flash. So last week when my drive was full, I deleted a few things but it just seemed like there should have been more room on my drive. For the life of me I couldn’t find where my hard drive space had gone.

There has to be a better solution than scouring through my folders looking for something I missed. So I hit google and found GrandPerspective. A great app that shows a block view of your hard drive and its files. It lets you see in a glance where files are hiding, and with a click you can find where they are on your drive. In the end, I found that I had some duplicate movies as well as some large files in my Drop Box I had forgotten about.

I now consider GrandPerspective a must have utility. Im sure it will be a no brainer the next time I need help clearing some space. With drives getting bigger and cheaper, its more likely you’ll forget about that monster file hogging space somewhere on your computer.

On a side Note, I am seriously planing an upgrade to my Macbook Pro’s hard drive in the near future. With 250Gig drives for under $100 at newegg.com (250Gig Macbook Pro 2.5 SATA 9.5mm thick HDD $80) why wouldn’t you? Maybe because its a pain in the rear to open the Macbook Pro (Macbook Pro HDD replace tutorial). But I’m gona do it one of these weekends. Ill be sure to post an article when I do. Note that the MacBook can utilize the larger 12mm thick drives (400Gig MacBook 2.5 SATA 12mm thick HDD $99). Also the Macbook HDD has a much easier install (MacBook HDD replace tutorial).
